With the recent announcement of the Fallout 3 DLC coming to the PS3, a question arose in my mind. Should gamers be charged full price for DLC or games that are timed exclusives once they release on the console that was forced to wait for the content?
Game publishers are compensated by whatever company they choose to make their exclusive deals with. In this case, the companies we’re discussing are either Sony or Microsoft. Their compensations range from funding, all the way to exclusive advertisement deals. If a game debuts on the Xbox 360 a year before its released on the PS3, such as Bioshock, then I feel there is no way in hell that the publisher should try to double dip on the PS3 fan base with a full priced game. It’s wrong and insulting to try and make any gamer pay full price for a game that came out six months to a year earlier on a different console. Everyone knows that a game’s value depreciates once it is released. If there is a cheaper version of a game on another system due to that particular version being in the market longer, then it makes it harder to justify paying full price when you can just purchase the cheaper version and have pretty much the same experience on another console.
Also, another reason why I feel it’s wrong for gamers to have to pay full price for timed exclusive deals released later on any particular console is because the majority of the hype would have greatly diminished and the story, if there is any, would already be known. I mean, that’s why movies receive a majority of their revenue during the opening weekend; people like to be involved with what’s popular at that moment, and they want to discuss their reactions while it’s a current topic. The same scenario applies to games, if not more so, because the whole gaming industry is based off of what is popular at any particular time. Think about it, game websites fight to be the first to post exclusive reviews and previews to capture the hype surrounding a game. E3, America’s largest video game expo, is based all off of hype! Hype drives the gaming industry. Well gamers, what do you guys think? Are publishers wrong for trying to charge full price for timed exclusive games and DLC once they release later on a console?
